Why are some of Britain’s ancient woodlands failing to regenerate?
With forests under pressure from drought, heat, disease and deer, a study has found fewer trees across a range of species surviving to maturity. But scientists say there is still hope
To the untrained eye, Monks Wood looks healthy and lush in the summer sun. Hundreds of butterflies dance on the edge of footpaths in the ancient Cambridgeshire woodland, which is rich with ash, maple and oak trees. Birds flit through the hedgerows as they feed. A fox ambles through a forest clearing, before disappearing into long grass.
But for a number of years, it has been clear to Bruno Ladvocat and Rachel Mailes that something is missing. In 2022, Ladvocat, Mailes and their research team from Birmingham University were out sampling when they noticed that the small trees that typically cover the woodland floor were increasingly hard to find.

More South Portland Study Weekend Gardens, pt. 2
The last three gardens on last Saturday’s tour included a large shade garden, a tropical oasis and an Asian-inspired retreat.
First, the Hilderbrand garden in Oregon City. This garden is set in a grove of Douglas Fir trees and has paved pathways that meander through plantings of dogwoods, hydrangeas, viburnums, kalmias and other shade-loving plants.
The garden of Michael Hicks and Megan Big John is a quarter-acre plot in West Linn. This garden is packed with plantings of tropical plants with big beautiful leaves and vibrant pops of color.
Helena Wagner’s “4 Seasons Garden” is a garden that I have visited in the past. It features an Asian-inspired theme with beautifully placed plants, with nice colors and contrasts.

Looking for Permaculture Practitioners
Hello Permaculture Subreddit! It’s a pleasure to be in touch with you all! I am working on a study at CU Boulder around Pathways for Sustainability Transitions in Agriculture and would be honored if you would consider participating through a short interview. My research question aims to answer: How are agroforestry and permaculture practices influencing food access in the rural United States? I want to explore the benefits and challenges of having an agroforestry practice, as well as the ways it has ties to supporting food access or not. To participate, you must be 18 years-old or above and self-identify as a practitioner of or decision-maker around a form of agroforestry or permaculture. Ideally, participants self-identify as living in a rural area. If you’re willing to participate, I’d love to explore some next steps together. The interview would be 45 minutes to an hour long and be a great help to my work. Thanks greatly for the consideration!
