first time permaculture plant and fungi recommendations

first time permaculture plant and fungi recommendations

This project is taking place on my grandparents’ property just outside of Hood River City Oregon. This year I will focus on the soil i.e. using wood shavings and grass clippings as mulch and propagating ground cover like clover. The area used to be a apple orchard 40 or so years ago so the soil should good for the trees I plan on planting namely apple, peach, and plum trees. What I’m asking for help with is recommendations on the under brush and other fruit trees that will do well in my area. If possible I’d prefer the plants to ether be edible or medicinal. I also have experience in growing mushrooms I am currently trying to propagate morels in a different area on the same property so if there are any fungi that would help the food forest that would be appreciated.

⭐ Hi! 😊 I’m working on a gardening game inspired by permaculture! 🌿 Each plant has a dynamic watering, soil and neighbourhood value & each value has an ideal and worst zone per plant type 📜 Do you have any other permaculture or garden related ideas I could add to the game? 🤗

⭐ Hi! 😊 I'm working on a gardening game inspired by permaculture! 🌿 Each plant has a dynamic watering, soil and neighbourhood value & each value has an ideal and worst zone per plant type 📜 Do you have any other permaculture or garden related ideas I could add to the game? 🤗

Hi! I’m happy for any feedback 😊

A short breakdown of the main permaculture-like mechanics/system I have:

The game has a dynamic status system for plants. That means that they do not have a simple watered/unwatered stat that you have to care about once a day per crop but they have different ideal or worse states of watering, soil and neighbourhood. One plant for example has a wider area of ideal watering meaning it likes to have wet soil while another has a very thin ideal zone meaning it is very picky and needs just the right amount of watering. 😇

Plant neighbourhood is simply calculated by all the crops around a plant in a specific radius. Each liked neighbour counts +1 and each disliked -1. If the total neighbourhood value is above 0 it is good – else the plant stops growing and demands change.

The game also has a multi-chambered composting system (you get better soil/fertilizer from higher chambers but they take longer to transform the compost input).

I want the game to still be cute and have less negative feedback than other farming games (for example no plants can die, they just stop growing) – some more complex gardening system are therefore hard to implement 😅 But I will still appreciate any inspiration and suggestion!!! 😇

Especially pests and watering systems were named in the past – how would you add pest control without well… killing animals? 🤔

Thank you in advance for your thoughts! 🤗

PS: If you want to check out the game you can do that here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2455710/Golembert/ I appreciate every wishlist! ❤️

A Brief Reprieve From Rain

A Brief Reprieve From Rain

Heathers
 (Calluna vulgaris
 ‘Firefly’ and ‘Multicolor’)

I believe it is a given that if you leave home for a lengthy period of time, the weather is going to be clear and mild while you are away. And as soon as you get back home, the cold and rainy weather will proceed.

This morning, after a week of rain, I woke up to sunshine. Michael informed me that it was going to be dry until later in the evening. I had planned to stay home today since we are expecting deliveries. Our old refrigerator that we were using in the garage bit the dust last week. It was valuable for storing frozen foods and miscellaneous items when there was not enough room in our main fridge. We ventured out to our local appliance store a few days ago and while there, we decided to get a new microwave as well since our current one is beginning to do strange things. Those are to be delivered today as well as a doll that Michael ordered from Japan and will require a signature.
The rain over the past week has been good, however, because I’ve accomplished some transplanting and it is good to have moisture for that.
I am getting caught up on pruning although there remains much to be done on that front.
I puttered around out front so I could be on the lookout for FedEx. I was musing over the things that I should have done during the winter months and didn’t –
I want to replace our front gate and arbor. I’ve been collecting photos on Pinterist and I am leaning toward something like this –
Of course the gates that I really love would not look right with our ranch-style house so I am constantly reminding myself of that. I would also like to incorporate our gigantic mailbox somehow into the design but I would need a designer to help me figure that out.
I’ve also been mulling over our walkway which needs attention. Since the walkway slightly inclines, I was thinking large pavers would work. However, it is such a small space that a smaller patterned stone or brick might be better.
I see a lot of this lately but I don’t know – too modern looking?
As Scarlett said, “I’ll think about that tomorrow”. In the meantime, some easier things to contemplate –
Skimmia and Pieris ‘Little Heath’ looking fantastic right now.

Camellia ‘Bella Rossa’
Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’

I’m pleased to see that Eucalyptus ‘Baby Blue’ made it through the winter.
A surprise in the sequoia!

How much shade do Winecap mushrooms need? [technique]

How much shade do Winecap mushrooms need? [technique]

Wanting to start some Winecap Mushrooms (maybe some oyster) in my garden, both to eat and to bring some life back into my soil. Wondering exactly how much sun these guys can take. There would be morning shade, but afternoon sun for most of the garden… Would watering the woodchip more help them or is the heat from the afternoon sun going to damage the mycelium??? Zone 6 but July and August are regularly in the high 90s Thank you in advance if you know the answers to my questions 😁
